On March 12, 2018, The TCS delegation met with Mr. IMASATO Yuzuru, Deputy Commissioner of Japan Sports Agency and discussed on the tangible strategies and measures to strengthen the trilateral cooperation. Secretary-General Mr. LEE Jong-heon recognized the meaningfulness of sports cooperation among the three countries as emerging area with full of potential and affirmed sincere support from TCS for the coming 2nd Trilateral Sports Ministers’ Meeting. Mr. IMASATO asked for close coordination role of the TCS to further stimulating the cooperation in sports sector mentioning various stake-holders such as Ministries, local governments, health/welfare industries, and tourism companies. Both sides agreed to make further efforts to enhance public awareness on the sports cooperation.

The TCS also made a courtesy call to Ministry of Environment and met Mr. MORISHITA Satoru, Director-General of Global Environment Bureau. SG LEE emphasized the successful institutionalization of the Tripartite Environment Ministers’ Meeting (TEMM) during the last 20 years and the TCS’s continuous contributions to the mechanism including the Trilateral Teacher’s Exchange Program. Mr. MORISHITA recognized the TCS’s efficient supports after its establishment and mentioned possible collaboration for the public awareness projects for environment protection. Both sides discussed more in detail about ways to raise public awareness on environmental protection among the three countries, and how TCS can enhance know-how sharing between the Ministries.

During the courtesy visit to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the TCS delegation met with Mr. NAKANE Kazuyuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and exchanged views on current situation of trilateral cooperation. The three countries shares responsibility of regional peace and prosperity in various fields such as economy, environment, culture, disaster management and people to people exchange. In this sense, State Minister NAKANE expressed his gratitude for TCS’ great efforts and stressed its important role in promoting further future-oriented cooperation among the three countries. SG LEE expressed sincere gratitude for the generous support by Japanese Foreign Ministry on the trilateral cooperation as a Chair Country and wished another successful Trilateral Summit in near future. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to collectively work towards earliest resumption of the Trilateral Summit by keeping close cooperation.

Furthermore, the TCS delegation met Mr. SHINOHARA Yasuhiro, Director-General for International Affairs of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism to discuss substantial enrichment measures for cooperation related to the Ministry. SG LEE proposed to organize trilateral follow-up projects as a stepping stone between Minister-level meetings such as Water Resources (triennial) and Transport and Logistics (biannual) and shared various coordination ideas and cases of other trilateral mechanisms. Mr. SHINOHARA expressed gratitude on the substantial supports from the TCS regarding the upcoming Ministers’ Meeting on Water Resources and reaffirmed to facilitate further cooperation with the TCS. Both sides agreed to explore measures to utilize the TCS as a common asset of the three countries.
